20th century German-Polish-Jewish Rabbi, scholar, and a leader of Progressive Judaism. On 27 Jan. 1943, he was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. He became the "honorary head" of the Council of Elders (Judenrat) in Theresienstadt. As such, he was protected from transports and with his protection list, could also save his relatives from transports, among others his grand-niece Ruth (b. 1925). Born in Schildberg (now Ostrzeszow, Poland) on September 1, 1874, Elbogen studied at the University of Breslau and the Juedisch-theologisches Seminar, Breslau, receiving his doctorate in 1898 and rabbinical ordination the following year. He taught at the Collegio Rabbinico Italiano, Florence, from 1899 to 1902 and at the Hochschule fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums, Berlin from 1902 to 1938, when he emigrated to the United States. Born in Krotoschin (now Krotoszyn, Poland) on September 30, 1875, Dienemann studied at the University of Breslau and the Juedisch-theologisches Seminar, Breslau, receiving his doctorate and rabbinical ordination in 1898. He served as rabbi in Ratibor and Offenbach until his emigration to Palestine in 1938. He died in Tel Aviv on April 10, 1939.
